VICE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
by Kerry Condon

We all want more in life.  We want more in our relationships with family and friends.  We want more at our work place with responsibilities, promotional opportunities and pay & benefits.  We just want to have more of everything.  It is easy to look at others and see what they have that we do not have.  It can make us work that much harder at times striving to get the most out of life, and at times it can make life hard and disappointing.

Today’s economic troubles have taken its toll on the working family over the last few years.  Unemployment is very high, the stock market has taken a heavy hit, the housing market crash and home value decline has hurt many Americans and the future sees more of the same.  The commercial real estate market is following the housing market as of late and we all know about the state budget woes and how that trickles down to the municipality levels.  Public employees are getting laid off in record numbers and government employees are getting work furloughs to help balance budget deficits.

Over the last few months, The Anaheim Police Association Negotiation Team has been in talks with the City reference these topics and our current contract.  We have worked hard in several areas to get prepared for these meetings by hiring an accounting firm to audit the City of Anaheim’s Financial portfolio, worked with our political consultant, Peter Mitchell, on state and local issues that have a direct impact on us, hired our negotiating attorney of Robert Wexler to be lead in our talks with the city, and communicated effectively with other departments in the city and county along with Police Management, City Management and City Council.  By doing this we were able to create and follow an intelligent plan relating to our current contract and what lies ahead in the future for our bargaining unit.

By the time this edition of the Hotsheet comes to your mail box, we hope to have had some informational meetings reference a tentative agreement between the City of Anaheim and the Anaheim Police Association.  We will have our Negotiation Team on hand for the presentations to bring our membership all the information necessary in order for you to make an intelligent decision whether to accept or deny this proposal.  These meetings are very important and we need all our members to attend and stay informed on this issue.
