One possible reason for this discrepancy is the shift in how Instagram’s algorithm prioritizes content. While likes remain an important indicator of popularity, they are no longer the sole determinant of visibility or engagement quality. The platform increasingly values meaningful interactions—such as comments, shares, saves, and direct messages—over passive actions like double-tapping a post. Similarly, changes in Instagram’s features—like hiding public likes—can alter user behavior and make traditional metrics less reliable indicators of success.

To address these challenges and improve overall engagement rates, focus on creating authentic connections with your audience by encouraging meaningful dialogue through captions and interactive tools like polls or Q&A sessions in Stories. Diversify content formats to keep things fresh and experiment with posting times based on analytics insights about when your audience is most active.

Ultimately, while high likes are gratifying at first glance, fostering genuine relationships with engaged followers will lead to sustainable growth—and higher-quality interactions—in the long run.
